Can I still buy R-22 in 2025?
Yes. While new production of R-22 ended in 2020, existing stockpiles and reclaimed R-22 are fully legal to purchase and use for servicing equipment already in the field. EPA certification is required.
Do I need EPA certification?
Yes. EPA Section 608 Type II or Universal certification is required by federal law to purchase R-22. Wholesalers may purchase with a signed resale statement.
What is current R-22 pricing?

What are the best R-22 replacements?
The most commonly used drop-in retrofit blends are R-407C, R-422B, R-438A, and R-421A. All work in existing R-22 equipment without major system changes.
Can R-22 mix with R-410A?
No. R-22 and R-410A are incompatible — different oils, different operating pressures. Never mix refrigerants or use R-410A in an R-22 system.
How much R-22 does a system need?
Typically 2–4 lbs per ton of cooling capacity. A 3-ton residential system holds approximately 6–12 lbs. Always refer to the equipment nameplate for exact charge specifications.

R22 production was permanently banned in the United States on January 1, 2020, under the EPA's HCFC phaseout schedule. However, R22 remains completely legal to purchase and use for servicing existing equipment — it is not banned from use, only from new production.
